NFL great David “Deacon” Jones passes away at 74

The NFL defensive linemen was credited for terming the word sack for how he knocked down the opposing quarterbacks.

“Deacon Jones was one of the greatest players in NFL history. Off the field, he was a true giant,” said Redskins general manager Bruce Allen, whose father, George, coached Jones with the Los Angeles Rams. “His passion and spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him. He was a cherished member of the Allen family and I will always consider him my big brother.”

Jones was the leader of the Rams fearsome foursome during the 1960’s. A 14th round draft pick out of Mississippi Valley State Jones made quite an impact, unofficially recording 173 and 1/2 sacks during his career. He was also the first defensive linemen to ever record 100 tackles in a season.

He was elected to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1980.
